Age spots is also known as brown spots, dark spots, sun spots and liver spots. Aging, genetics and some other factors like pregnancy, vitamin deficiencies, weak liver functioning and stress leads to age spots. Excessive exposure of skin to the sun causes also causes an increase in the production of melanocytes(melanin) in the skin which causes dark spots.
The dark skin spots generally appear on the exposed skin areas like the face, back, neck, chest, shoulders and hands.
Some home remedies for age spots
Lemon juice has bleaching properties which helps fight age spots. Fresh lemon juice may be applied directly on the affected area and rinsed off with cold water after leaving for about half an hour. It may take two to three months to see the results if the remedy is applied daily. Lemon juice may be diluted with water, rose water or honey if the skin is sensitive.
A paste made by mixing sugar in lemon juice may be used as scrub to reduce brown spots.
Sandalwood powder may be used in various ways to reduce age spots and improve skin. A face pack can be made at home by mixing sandalwood powder, rose water, glycerine and lemon juice. Apply this pack and let it dry. Then use cold water to wash it off.
Sandalwood oil can also be mixed with olive oil or almond oil and applied daily before going to bed.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Mix apple cider vinegar and water in equal quantities and apply this solution on the spots. Leave for few minutes and wash it off. Orange juice may also be mixed with apple cider vinegar.
Buttermilk should be applied on the spots and left for some time before rinsing with water. The lactic acid in buttermilk helps in removing the blemishes.
Rubbing fresh aloe vera gel soothes the skin and also helps in reducing the spots. The gel should be left for half an hour for better results.
Applying castor oil is another home remedy for age spots. It may be applied on the affected area and left for few hours before washing.This remedy should be applied in the morning and at night to help reduce the spots and make skin tone even.
Papaya helps in reducing age spots and other skin problems and helps make skin soft. Apply fresh papaya on the spots, leave till it dries completely and wash with lukewarm water.
Applying plain yoghurt directly on the spot and washing it off with cold water when the yoghurt has dried completely is also effective in treatment of age spot. It may also be applied and left over night for quicker results.
Olive Oil + Vinegar
A spoonful of olive oil and vinegar can be mixed and applied to the spots and should be washed off with water after keeping it on for about half an hour. This is a useful home remedy for erasing age spots.
Milk + Turmeric powder
A paste made from milk and turmeric powder can be applied on the age spots to reduce them visibly.
Apply sunscreen before stepping out in the sun to prevent age spots from spreading.
